Veterans Wood Shop
Build Something. Learn Something. Share Something.
The HOHP Veterans Wood Shop is a hands-on class where veterans come together to learn woodworking skills, build real projects, and spend time with fellow service members in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Whether you have never picked up a chisel or you have been turning out furniture for years, there is a place for you here.
Woodworking has a way of slowing the world down. The smell of fresh sawdust, the rhythm of the sanding, the focus required to make a clean cut — it gives you something steady to put your hands and your mind on. For a lot of veterans, that kind of focused, quiet work is exactly what they need.
Why Join the Veterans Wood Shop?
This is more than a class. It is a community of veterans working side by side, learning from each other, and creating things to be proud of.

What You’ll Build
Projects vary from session to session and are chosen to match the skills of the group. Common starter projects include:
Cutting boards and serving boards
Birdhouses and outdoor projects
Wood flag displays and shadow boxes
Simple furniture pieces like shelves, side tables, and benches
Small boxes, trays, and keepsake holders
Custom projects based on personal interests
As your skills grow, you will have the chance to take on bigger, more detailed builds. Instructors help each veteran pick projects that stretch their abilities without getting overwhelming.
What to Bring
HOHP provides the tools, workspace, and most materials. Here is what we recommend you bring with you:
Closed-toe shoes and clothes you do not mind getting sawdust on
Safety glasses if you have your own (we have extras if you need them)
Hearing protection if you prefer your own
A water bottle
Any specific project ideas, sketches, or plans if you have something in mind Long sleeves, loose jewelry, and open shoes are best left at home. Safety first, always.
Safety First
Every veteran goes through a short safety orientation before using the shop. Our instructors walk you through proper use of each tool, safe handling of materials, and what to do if something goes wrong. You will never be pressured to use a tool you are not comfortable with, and instructors are nearby to help every step of the way.
More Than Just Woodworking
For many veterans, the wood shop becomes something bigger than a hobby. It is a reason to get out of the house, a place to reset after a tough week, and a chance to build something real with your own hands. The conversations that happen over a planer or a finished box are often just as important as the projects themselves.
At HOHP, we have seen how powerful this kind of shared, purposeful time can be. That is why the wood shop matters.
